Consuelo Cavaniglia the divided person

Opening: Wednesday 31 August, 6-8pm Dates: 31 August - 17 September 2016

In 1978 artist Channa Horwitz staged a work entitled Poem/Opera, the Divided Person. Eight actors read from metres-long scrolls to the beat of a metronome, words describing oppositional qualities of a person – inner/outer, young/old, happy/sad, dreamer/realist. Each script different, the eight voices read simultaneously, creating a jostling sound piece that combined order and disorder. The split was in the division between written and spoken word and oppositional qualities described.

The description of this work has stayed with me. It connects to my continued interest in divisions and doubles. This exhibition further considers the idea of a division, though instead of oppositions – a this or a that – the work uses line and reflections to create multiple splits: in the space, the definition of an object and the position of the viewer. The propositions are splintered, numerous and simultaneous.

Consuelo is an interdisciplinary artist whose work focuses on how we see and understand space. Independent curatorial projects have consistently flanked her practice. Currently based in Sydney, Consuelo is a Masters of Fine Art candidate at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. She has exhibited in various galleries nationally including TCB Inc. Melbourne, SCA Galleries, Sydney, and Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in 2015; Sarah Cottier Gallery, Sydney, 55 Sydenham Road, Sydney, and Perth Centre for Photography in 2014; Firstdraft, Sydney, and Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, Perth, in 2013; and Galerie Düsseldorf, Perth, 2012. Consuelo was a recipient of a NAVA NSW Artist Grant, is a finalist in the NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) and has just undertaken a residency in the Pilbara through FORM.
