Visaya Hoffie Mnemonic Generator
Opening: Wednesday 16th July, 6-9pm Dates: July 16 - Aug 23 2025
In spoken and written language, mnemonics offer memory-triggers. As a visual language, painting offers triggers that dislodge the forgotten corners of memory and that retrieve them into new associations. The act of viewing a painting involves processes where a visual field activates responses that link the recognisable to the mysterious or forgotten, the past and present, the commonplace to the profound. In this series, Hoffie combines readily recognisable symbols and forms with aspects that may appear contradictory and unrelated to weave together a new provisional narrative. Hoffie uses traditional materials and approaches to painting and juxtaposes them with sometimes half familiar forms from popular culture and other contemporary realms. Hoffie work nods towards traditional landscape painting populated by subject matter from contemporary culture that seem both eerily strange and oddly familiar.
Visaya Hoffie’s practice extends through ‘expanded painting’ into sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, design, animation, leatherwork, haberdashery and a range of craft media that she often brings together in immersive installations that locate the viewer as an essential and performative element in the work.
The artist brings a broad range of historical and cultural experiences and references to bear on her slightly wry, amused and often revealing responses to our contemporary cultural landscape. Her work often suggests new paradigms for world-making where hybridised boot-legged characters transcend hierarchies of taste and toy with the limitations of aesthetic boundaries.
