Angela Louise Powell and Katie Eva Ryan Implicit/Explicit

Opening: Wednesday 10th of May, 6–8pm Dates: 10 May – 3 June 2017

For ‘Implicit/Explicit’, Angela Louise Powell and Katie Eva Ryan explore the intimate space of memory through sculptural forms. The title references implicit and explicit memory, the two types of long term human memory. Implicit memory is acquired and used unconsciously, whereas explicit memory is conscious recollection. The show will bring together both artists approaches to recreating memory, facilitating the potential for correlations and disjunctions. These points of convergence and deviation will evoke the changeable and autonomous nature of memory itself.

Melbourne-based artist Angela Louise Powell’s practice predominantly investigates the notion of liminal space, through an applied investigation of industrial and elemental materials. Powell’s practice employs materials latent potential to engage with a psychoanalytical exploration on notions of emotional thresholds, sketching personal understandings of psychological spaces.

Katie Eva Ryan’s practice takes the form of installation, sculpture and video. Her work explores memory, perception and the subconscious. Ryan is fascinated by how we process and attempt to account for the unaccountable nature of our lived experience. Her works are generated from everyday objects, which are abstracted to create forms that teeter between the familiar and the unknown.
