Harriet Turnbull

Opening: Tuesday 31 August, 6-8pm Dates: 31 August-18 September 2004

Harriet Turnbull was born in New Zealand and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Canterbury University in Christchurch New Zealand. In 2003 she completed a Master of Fine Arts by research at the Victorian College of the Arts, where she was awarded the National Gallery of Victoria Women’s Association Postgraduate Award. Harriet has exhibited widely in Melbourne with shows at Seventh, Bus, Kings ARI, Concial and VCA galleries, as well as Live performances at the Abbotsford convent, Melbourne Docklands and Federation Square. In 2003 Harriet became a committee member of the artist Run gallery Conical. Her involvement with Conical from 2003 – 2007 led to a number of collaborative art projects. Two of which ‘Itug’ and ‘guideline’ were strongly performance based.

Harriet Turnbull is a live artist who adopts personas and costumes to explore the experiences of being human, often in an absurdist fashion. Through personas such as ‘Bunny’ and ‘Flight Attendant’, Harriet uses Live performance and video to critique the social, cultural and personal context of being human. ‘Bunny’ was ‘born’ through the establishment of an active 1900 chatline, 1900 PETTING to first hand research intimacy and as humans our experiencing of intimacy. ‘Flight Attendant’ originated as a satrical comment on the endless negotiations that as humans we encounter in public spaces on a daily basis.
