Opening: Wednesday 25 February 2015 Dates: 25 February-14 March 2015

A joint study by Georgia Hutchison and Luca Lana observes the aesthetics present in controlled civic spaces. Three new works made in conjunction aim to define a current language that surmises contemporary western systems of labor and control.

The objects by which we will be defined, those which are contemporaneous and defining are the minutiae tactile fixtures and control measures: council painted, anonymously designed and manually installed. The designed neutrality of these objects offers a public good — activated spaces and risk free edges. With anonymity and universality of intent — the 50% grey, the riskless and inoffensive deride the artist-designer-architect’s dream of an Australian aesthetic.

Luca Lana has a Masters in Architecture, runs his own practice Lanarepublic, he is running A Masters design studio at Melbourne and Monash Universities called ‘Concrete Dreams’. he also instructs Architectural History at Monash University. His research originally titled ‘Abort Architecture’ looks at how digital democratization of architectural design skills and production for better or worse has the potential to unlock enormous and random creative energies in suburban areas.

Georgia Hutchison has Honours in Industrial Design and is an independent designer, curator, and photographer — and sessional lecturer in Industrial Design at RMIT addressing creative and critical concerns. Hutchison’s creative practice contemplates notions of thingness and commodity, materialism and systems of value.
