Agnes So Dot Line Plane

Opening: Tuesday 21 June, 6-8pm Dates: 21 June-9 July 2011

‘Dot Line Plane’ is a series of quick cut videos depicting the artist and a minimalist array of everyday objects engaging in performative acts that are taken directly from Richard Serra’s ‘Verb List Compilation: Actions to Relate to Oneself’ (1967 – 1968). These actions, documented through the camera’s pictorial frame, show materials being subjected to simple notions of physics and form such as gravity, balance, bending, breaking and dropping.

However, what these mundane tests start to reveal is the fine line between construction and collapse. While graduating towards a state of failure, these objects come to find themselves at a point of abolition. What then occurs is a questioning of one’s attitudes towards values and functions, transforming these rather inane performances into significant events that heighten one’s perception towards the everyday.Agnes So was born in Hong Kong, immigrating to New Zealand shortly after. She is currently residing in Melbourne and completing a Master of Fine Art at RMIT University. Recent exhibitions include Prospective Futures at c3 Contemporary Art Space, Melbourne, 2011; trololol at TCB Gallery, Melbourne, 2011 and Sculpture Season at St Paul Street Gallery Three, Auckland, New Zealand, 2009.Dot Line Plane is an RMIT Link – Arts and Culture supported Presentation.
