Jessica McElhinney CatTube

Opening: Tuesday 6 September, 6-8pm Dates: 6-24 September

CatTube is a video in which the artist’s cat watches itself reenacting funny cat clips on YouTube. This leads to a loss of distinction and blurring of boundaries between the cat as the viewer and the cat as the viewed. The work promotes the interplay between reality and illusion, between actual and virtual. CatTube explores how the mirror effect in art can illustrate the conflictual nature of the viewer’s relation to the imaginary and the real.

Jessica McElhinney is a Melbourne based video artist. Her artwork is largely concerned with the sense of nostalgia found in common representations of the home, whilst also investigates the psychological space of the house. Performance and self-portraiture also feature prominently in Jessica’s work. Since completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at RMIT in 2009 she has been exhibiting around Australia. Recent exhibitions include solo exhibition HOME TIME which was shown at TCB in 2010 and group shows It’s Not You, It’s Me at RMIT’s Project Space Gallery and Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Flowerfaceat 24 HR Art Northern Territory Centre for Contemporary Art in 2011.

Jessica McElhinney’s work is presented as part of a curated program for BUS Projects’ Screen Space by Kim Brockett.
