Alethea Everard A Hole in the Head

Opening: Wednesday 7 June, 6–8pm Dates: 7 June – 1 July 2017

Hieronymous Bosch’s painting ‘Cutting the Stone’ (aka ‘The Extraction of the Stone of Madness’) depicts a trepanation, a surgical procedure to the scalp, in the middle of an open landscape, somewhere towards the end of the 15th century. Ailment and operation already being discomforting, the distance of time and of unproven medicine bordering on magick further the image’s uneasy air. A useless hole being drilled into a skull seems as useless as images scrawled on a cave wall, but in their uselessness, overwhelm and seduce.

The excess of meaning takes a toll on the mind. Meaninglessness as a disease, meaninglessness as a cure. A hole in the head for a hole in the head?

Alethea Everard completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2016. Recent exhibitions include ‘Michael Douglas’ top floor 12 Waratah Place, ‘neu year’ Monica’s Gallery/Punk Cafe, and ‘The Union Collection: Recent Acquisitions 2012 - 2016’ George Paton Gallery.
